Vice City didn't invent synthwave, but it sold it to a generation. Released in 2002, Rockstar's homage to Scarface, Miami Vice and the entire pastel-saturated fever dream of the 1980s remains, for many, the high-water mark of the entire series. The colour palette, Ray Liotta's career-defining voice work as Tommy Vercetti, the synth-heavy radio stations, the way the sunset turns the entire Ocean Drive strip into a Hockney painting — it all still slaps in 2026.
With GTA 6 returning to Vice City this fall, there's never been a better moment to replay the original and see exactly which beats Rockstar is going to remix.

80s Lore: The World of Vice City
Set in 1986, Vice City is Rockstar's love letter to the cocaine-fueled paradise that early-80s Miami genuinely was. The game's plot lifts liberally from Scarface(the rise from nothing, the Sosa-style suppliers, the literal mansion staircase shootout), but it's the world-building that earned it classic status. Radio stations span genuine 80s hits — Flash FM's "Africa" by Toto, V-Rock's "Round and Round" by Ratt — alongside Lazlow's V-Rock interviews and Wave 103's synthpop deep cuts. Pick a station and the entire game shifts genre.
The map itself is split between the wealthier western islands (Starfish, Prawn, Leaf Links) and the grittier eastern half (Little Havana, Little Haiti, the downtown port). The mall, the malibu club, the Pole Position strip joint — they all feel like locations that existed, because Rockstar deliberately modelled them on real Miami landmarks of the era. GTA 6's Vice City will inherit a lot of this DNA, just shifted forty years forward.
